The State Of The Trading Card Industry -- Mounir Gad's Post July 20th 2021

Los Gatos, CA -- July 20th, 2021

Old passions are rediscovered as people rummage through cellars and attics in search of happiness and nostalgia. When a significant portion of the population finds themselves under the thumb of some sort of old collection with baseball trading cards, a fire is lit and people look for more.

Talk to anyone in the sport card industry and they will tell you that the hobby of collecting trading cards will never go away, but it will continue to evolve. The power of trading cards is the fact that people can find them as a piece of happiness and joy in these crazy times when you are just freaking out and happy to have a good distraction.

Things began to shift when all four major sports leagues signed exclusive trade-card deals with a card manufacturer. Last August, rookie Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans signed a multi-year trade card deal with Panini America to cover the NBA on his college license cards at Duke and on his official autograph card.

Sports trading cards are widely used in cricket, baseball, association football, boxing and cycling, among others. Rookie cards from Hall of Fame sports stars can fetch thousands of dollars, and they are well preserved. The global sports trading card market is driven by significant technological advances in trading cards.

It is estimated that the huge population and presence of the field in developing countries around the world will drive the growth of the sport card market in the coming years. Rapid growth in emerging markets such as the Middle East and Asia-Pacific due to rapid urbanization will further boost the global sports trading cards market. China and India are two of the largest emerging markets offering lucrative business opportunities in the sports trading card industry.

I met Jared Bleznick to discuss why childhood passion has turned into business, why professional sports have not hurt the collecting of sports cards and why he feels that the case for breaking has not reached its climax yet. Last year saw a boom in the sports and Pokemon card collections, creating a marketplace for the industry which Dungeon Dugout owner Jessie Studle is trying to exploit. Several trends have shaped the sport of card collecting over the last decade, and further technological advances and other trends will help carry the sport into the future.

Their store displays boxes of sports cards and a few low-end options, such as a baseball card box that retails for $1.50. While none of these million dollar cards have turned into dungeons and dugouts, the total value of a single sports or Pokemon card in an unopened box or pack of cards has skyrocketed in the past year.

Baseball cards have become more expensive, but not to the same extent as basketball and football cards, she said. The latest trends show that not only are sports cards the top choice for collectibles, but also cards from games such as Pokemon, which saw sales rise more than 500% last year. Here are Darren's thoughts and predictions of how interest in collectibles will continue to grow in 2021, from non-traditional trading cards and sports memorabilia to video games, old basketball cards, and more.

Cards that deal with topics other than Pokemon, cartoons, cartoon characters, TV series, film stills, etc. Maps that are a bit off the beaten track but make sense in terms of recent popularity and low populations will continue to reign.

As the children grew up, it was like browsing Finnigana's goldmine of sports memorabilia to keep his hobby alive. Early prices were found in retail products such as cigar cards and business cards (not to be confused with trade cards placed in cigarette packs as stiffeners to protect contents). In the 1990s, cards developed for games became more and more popular and developed into a category of their own: trading card games.

The trade in sports cards is estimated to be worth several billion dollars, and it continues to grow. The best-selling online platform Trading Cards says the industry has hit new heights in the past year. As interest grew in sports card trading and card games such as Pokemon and Magic : The Gathering, trading cards decided to cut the numbers in their first Report on State of the Trading Card.

A recent eBay report seems to show that you are not alone if you buy sports tickets but have trouble finding them at the tills during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to eBay's latest State of the Trading Card Report, the category of trading cards grew 14.2 per cent in 2020, with more than four million more cards being sold on the site than in 2019. This growth is particularly evident in the sports card industry in 2020 - the first year of the pandemic.

The State of the Trading Card Report reports a 14.2% increase in domestic sales and 16.6% increase in global sales of trading cards, showing that the lovable anime Pokemon: Fire Dragon card sales rose by 57.4% from 2019 to 2020, with Charizard becoming the most popular card.

Running out of cards resembled a crazy grab for toilet paper and disinfectant last March, when wholesale chains imposed quantity limits on cards. Target took down MLB, NFL and NBA Pokemon Trading Card shelves after soaring demand led to violent incidents in store parking lots. The national trend is finding its way to Gillette card collectors, albeit to a lesser extent.

Brakken Barben, a map collector from Utah who has spent thousands of hours and dollars in his hobby, claims there are three main groups of people in the boom. According to him, unopened boxes are hard to find these days, and scalpers sell them for $200 or more. Others see card collecting as an investment in case the economy goes into recession.

When Panini of America entered the US market to buy Donrus trading cards after Texas received an exclusive license from the NBA, data analyses of the cash value of the cards showed that the secondary market on eBay cost Topps colorful and signature cards about 20% of their playing costs.

The Georgia-based distributor offers sports maps of the brands Topps, Panini, Leaf, Tristar, Sage, Historic, Autograph and Onyx. They include Topps and Panini sports cards (left, tri-star and ultra pro decks) as well as sports and playing cards and accessories.
